Anne Hathaway: The Catwoman latex suit was a “psychological terrorist”

Months ago, I was anxiously awaiting about a dozen summer movies, and they really couldn’t release them fast enough for me. And then time passed and the reviews started coming in, and I began reading more and more about these movies, and I’ve decided I will dub this period “The Summer of Let-Downs”. Prometheus sucked. I didn’t even see Snow White and the Huntsman after I basically stopped caring. I know Magic Mike is going to end up being some fruity romantic comedy in which “the boy” is a male stripper-slash-woodworker or something and there probably won’t be any dong, ever. So… do I need to be focus all of my energy on The Dark Knight Rises because I know Christopher Nolan is the one dude who won’t let me down? Or will I be disappointed in the end, because I’m putting all of my proverbial eggs in one basket? Unknown.

Anyway, TDKR comes out July 20, almost exactly one month from now. So the publicity campaigns are now going to begin in earnest. Thus, Anne Hathaway scored the cover of Allure Magazine. Surely she rates a more important magazine cover than Allure? Maybe that’s coming for the August issues? Here are some highlights from Anne’s interview:

On her dramatic weight loss for her role in ‘Les Miserables’: “I’m doing some crazy weight stuff right now… I’m on day six of detox …this diet makes me break out, so I love that. Nothing like living on hummus and radishes and then being all like ‘And I got a pimple’ Yeah.”

On nudity in acting: “I’m as vain as the next girl, but I think it’s my job to show people as they live, and nudity is a part of life.”

On passing up on a role in ‘Knocked Up’ due to an explicit birth scene: “I thought that [director] Judd [Apatow] was right to include the shot. I didn’t disagree with the shot… My issue with it was that having not experienced motherhood myself, I didn’t know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth.”

On her Catwoman costume: “[It was] a psychological terrorist… the suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit… it dominated my year. I went into the gym for ten months and didn’t come out.”

I like how dry Annie is – “Nothing like living on hummus and radishes and then being all like ‘And I got a pimple’ Yeah.” I find her so refreshing – she’s not all “WOE IS ME, I am TRANSFORMING for my craft!!” Nor is she underplaying it unconvincingly. Being on a diet sucks. Detoxing sucks. Zits suck. But Anne does it anyway, because she’s a pro.

Oh, and I had no idea Anne was up for the lead in Knocked Up! That would have been a completely different movie with Anne. I wonder what she did instead? Looking it up… well, she did Becoming Jane in the spring of 2006, and Knocked Up filmed in May 2006. So… yeah, Anne probably made the right call. I liked Knocked Up, but I’m not sure how good Anne would have been in it.

Looking forward to seeing her on covers with her pixie cut and how they style it/her with it

  2. beyonce's bump says:

I cannot picture Anne in Knocked up. She was great in becoming Jane though. I am getting tres excited to see Les Miserables!

    • Liv says:

Come on! Who does she want to fool? Not being a mother is not an excuse for an actor to not play a role! Ridiculous!

      • ahoyhoy says:

This is an old story, but a brand-new excuse for Anne.

She thought the ‘birthing vag’ moment, as short as it was, was ‘unnecessary’. She argued w/ Apatow a long time, they couldn’t agree, and she dropped out of contention. This is the same original story from both their mouths.

Now I think she’s trying to sound more ‘director-friendly’ with the BS motherhood excuse.
AND I think I know what her problem was with the scene—the birthing vag was WAXED BALD and looked ridiculous. A 12-year old’s vagina giving birth. It was just DUMB, so dumb and ‘sanitized’ and frat-boy friendly, it may have caused an insurmountable argument. Just my speculation, because I can understand why the birth scene was included–but the bald vag doing it kind of represented with how women are ALWAYS sexualized on film. It bugged me–and I can see Anne being ‘convicted’ about it too. THAT IS, if she knew about his plan to show it waxed, of course. Since she knew the scene wasn’t going to be HER giving birth, it’s the only reason I can fathom why a 2-second clip of a stunt-birth would have possibly offended any actress so much. In a movie about a baby being born.

(I know some women get waxed before birth—but not the majority. A nice trim would have been much more realistic, unless a ‘pre-birth waxing funny’ had been in the script to explain the bald vag.)

Just a theory, guys. No shade, please. I’ve had a few rough days. Thanks in advance.

Ahoyhoy, you made me smile with your last short paragraph. Wishing you a better few days to come. 🙂

      • Tiffany says:

ahoyhoy, sorry to hear you have had a rough few days! Hugs!

I am a little surprised that they were discussing the shot in that much detail before shooting, to the point that they would talk about the grooming. I would expect that the script would have said something like, “CLOSE UP: BABY’S HEAD CROWNING”. They might have discussed whether that shot was necessary, but it seems really unlikely to me that it would already be determined to be a waxed vag at that time, and that it ultimately was the grooming (and not the close up) that was the sticking point.

Where did you hear all of these details? I would love to learn more.

  3. cmc says:

She looks stunning in these shots. I can’t help it though- I always see pre-makeover Mia Thermopolis (sp?) when I see her.

  4. Eve says:

I really don’t understand why you still haven’t checked The Avengers (though, at this point, I don’t think you will anyway). The reviews and the word-of-mouth were great.

Or maybe you feel about Marvel the same way I feel about DC…*shrugs*

    • Liv says:

The Avengers was great! I just saw Snowwhite and the Huntsman and I was quite disappointed! Some scenes were so good and then they messed it up! They could have done so much more with the story!!

      • Veruca says:

Whoever edited SWATH must’ve been drunk. The movie had fabulous potential, but looked like it had been chopped by a 4th grader.

      • Eve says:

        @ Liv:

Sadly, Kaiser has no love for The Avengers — even with all those hot dongs (he he he) in it… 😥

      • Liv says:

@ Veruca Agreed! I gave my sister (who watched it with me) the side eye the whole time, like, what the fuck are they doing there? 😉

@ Eve Seriously, I’m such a fan of Hiddleston now – how did he manage to wear this odd hair and still look great? 😉 And I looove Robert Downey Jr!! 🙂

    • Jenna says:

How could anyone not love The Avengers?!?! o_O For shame!

SWATH wasn’t as good as the trailers made it out to be, but I still liked it. Not that I’m biased or anything. cough*CHRIS*cough.

      • Eve says:

I don’t think she’s even seen it…I guess my constant mentioning of The Avengers here turned her off.

Sorry, but I couldn’t help it! The Avengers is simply a dream come true to me.

      • Jenna says:

Hell, I’ll mention it constantly! Avengers, Avengers, AVENGERS!!! 😀

  5. Lyssie89 says:

This summer has been a let down in the movie department to some degree, but it also has The Avengers and Moonrise Kingdom, which are two of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time (albeit very different). Check them out and have your faith in movies renewed lol.

  6. Rhea says:

I like her in the second picture!

  7. TheOriginalKitten says:

Well anytime there are huge studio movies with big names attached, promotion up the wazoo and tons of money riding on them, expectations will be high. I think the key is seeking out smaller-budget films where you don’t necessarily know the plot beforehand and all of the actors involved and you’re not bombarded with promotional material months before the film is released. It’s much less likely that you’ll be disappointed that way. In fact, more often than not, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  8. johnnybadboytapia says:

any one with Dish netowrk for some reason in the new realeases section on the ppv menu they are offering PROMETHEUS for free dont know for how long tho. Anne looks great always been a fan!!

  9. carrie says:

i dislike her make-up and her style here
i again think she’s a bad idea as Catwoman but she looks good in Les Mis

  10. alexis says:

The zits are from the detox. Zits, headaches, sore throat, just smelling bad…all detox things when eating the right foods.

  11. NM6804 says:

“My issue with it was that having not experienced motherhood myself, I didn’t know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth.”

Right Anne, but you did experience putting on a latex catsuit and jumping on roofs in the night and having a relationship with a man in a batsuit.

Or fighting with your best friend on who is going to marry where and first and end up breaking up with your fiance at the last minute.

    Or being a princess-to-be.

Or married to a gay cowboy…

    I mean COME ON girl!

  12. Aud says:

I don’t know. She never does come across as a woman with an intellect. I can’t handle reading her full interviews.

  13. Beatrix says:

“psychological terrorist?” a cat suit? file that one under supreme egotistical problem.

    • Fatkid says:

I don’t know. I think I would feel the same. I mean it’s not really a role you can turn down, but knowing that you will be filmed in skintight latex for all the world to see…living with that thought…trying to convince yourself to eat dinner knowing that’s in your future…imagining all of your flaws amplified by the super-snug suit….yep psychological terrorist sounds like a good description of what that suit would do to me.

  14. Dee Cee says:

She suffers more and does without, works harder and longer in horrible conditions without rest like a slave for what..

  15. gg says:

    She is sooo gorgeous!

  16. Abby says:

lol. Come on, I can’t believe you’re not going to see magic mike. The ticket price will be worth it for that cheesy man candy!

I love Anne. Was really unsure of her as Catwoman but the lace mask… ooh! And I cried when the trailer for Les Mis came on in the SWATH previews. Should be good.

  17. Feebee says:

She comes across just fine to me. I understand what she means by the catsuit being a psychological terrorist. No matter how great you think your shape is, sticking it into a latex catsuit and projecting it onto a 40ft screen must be daunting and utterly draining.

As far as the summer movies go I had to give SWATH a bit miss after reading reviews… today’s comments back that up. But non-comic book geek that I am I did see the Avengers even if the 2.26m length gave me pause and it blew me away. Maybe if I see Batman with similar low expectations I will be equally happy… I have no expectations for Magic Mike other than a bit of a laugh.

  18. LittleDeadGirl says:

I can’t wait to see Batman and I actually really love her casting as Catwoman. It’s interesting and not what I expected which is nice. I didn’t want someone overtly sexual that would be boobs. The movie didn’t need that and it didn’t need a carbon copy of Michele Pfeiffer either. It needed something new and she is it.

  19. Addison says:

Kaiser, Prometheus did NOT suck! Could it have been better? Of course.

What movies did suck? Greenlantern, Jonah Hex. It’s amazing how they had great stories to begin with and that the end result was a pile of garbage. I’m glad Wonder Woman is on hold. I don’t want other DC greats to be demolished.

Nolan has done a fantastic job with Batman. The Avengers was very entertaining. I would see it again AND Prometheus.
